Founded in the mountains of the Nagano Prefecture region of Japan in 1950, Pearl Izumi grew from the textile industry. Our founder, Kinji Shimizu, learned his trade manning looms in Lida City, creating textiles that literally had performance characteristics woven into their very fabric. Mr. Shimizu’s son, an aspiring bike racer, complained that the clothing of the day hindered his cycling performance. The concept that apparel could be engineered to aid the user in all conditions was born from the real-world needs of the athlete in motion. Today, more than 60 years after our founding, that entrepreneurial spirit and user-centric focus to empower the athlete still drives us.
